“It’s the adventure of painting that inspires me to paint. I’m energized by the painting process and by responding to what happens on the painting surface. I sometimes start working by laying down paint with no particular concept in mind and then work to create shapes, patterns, values and color relationships that are exciting to me. On other occasions, I may start a piece with a pre-conceived plan, but honestly, so much happens on the surface that I inevitably respond directly to what I see.” —Sheila DeLaquil

Maine Cottage in Better Homes & Gardens, special interest We appreciate how a recent Better Homes & Gardens “Big Style for Small Rooms” Special Interest Publication includes Maine Cottage mentions. The wicker table on the cover isn’t ours, but we’re listed as a source for similar wicker and rattan tables. We also found our Great Island Bookcase in an attractive home office. It looks like True Blue or Iris. And the popular wicker Bistro Chairs in Bluebell or Good Egg are enticing in a sunny dining space.

Martha Stewart Living

Thank you once again Martha Stewart Living for including us in the February 2011 Great Finds” (PDF). Building on the current pinkish red color trend and some neutral complements comes this article “Niche Appeal” with a Maine Cottage Daisy Side Chair in Smoothie. It’s also available as an Armchair. We like the emphasis on “an easy formality” in this article. Wicker chairs are the essence of this style and versatility.

Ev’ry honeybee…. fills with jealousy
When they see you out with me
I don’t blame them….goodness knows
Honeysuckle rose

When you’re passin’ by….flowers drop and sigh
And I know the reason why
You’re much sweeter….goodness knows
Honeysuckle rose

Maine Cottage Guest Bedroom

It’s not just red, pink or magenta. It’s uplifting and festive. A sensory experience. Pantone (color experts) calls it “Honeysuckle” and declared it the 2011 color of the year. We thought you’d like to know. If you’re in the Maine Cottage school of thought, you’ll agree that even a small hint of reds, red-pinks, and red-violets give a room (or wardrobe) a similar burst of energy. Maine Cottage rhubarb, shrimp, zinnia and even smoothie fall into this category of pinkish warm reds. And remember how fantastic these warm hues look with cooler blues, bluegreens, greens and neutrals for added drama and stimulation. A bouquet of fresh flowers or a fruit smoothie can have the same invigorating effect on a January day.

“Most of those who worked on the home describe it a ‘cottagey’. But that word belies the home’s real elegance.”

Maine Cottage was mentioned a second time in the September 2010 Maine Home + Design magazine in the article “Maine Art, Maine Color – Cottage Elegance in Kennebunk”. A Falmouth, Maine couple built this sparkling shingle-style cottage as part of a mini family compound in the small seaside community of Kennebunk. The furnishings include a Maine Cottage Frances Coffee Table in the living room. This is a quintessential modern day cottage home.
